Fiber is the technology used to deliver the service, the speed can vary. Gigabit is about the highest you can get at the consumer level today but you can also just get 100 or 300 or whatever the isp will sell you if you don’t need the extra speed. You still get the advantages of fiber, a more reliable and stable, usually symmetrical connection. My neighborhood was built in the 1970s with underground power, ATT phone lines, and Comcast cable lines... everything is underground. Every neighborhood nearby in any direction from mine has above ground utilities and got ATT fiber ~4 years ago. I have never heard any news about our neighborhood eventually getting fiber.
